Today, the global profile of cultured pearls is at an all-time high. In the worldwide jewellery industry, pearl jewellery ranks third in consumer preference, surpassed only by gold and diamonds.

Black Pearls feature in the collections of world jewellery and fashion houses Tiffany, Cartier, Mikimoto and Louis Vuitton. They grace the covers of international fashion & jewellery magazines, their magnetism, unrivalled history & tradition of romance is impossible to escape.

Far removed from the glamour of world jewellery icons, on a tiny atoll called Manihiki in the Northern Cook Islands, a resilient group of pearl farmers continue to play their part. Today, the result of their efforts can be viewed and admired in jewellery and black pearl retailers on both Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

Tips When Buying Black Pearls

The grading and sizing of black pearls can be quite confusing and you should not be discouraged if the pearl you choose is not classified A grade. There are many grades of pearls and qualified sales assistants can give you guidance with choosing just the right one (or strand) for you. Always ask if they are genuine Cook Islands black pearls. Ensure that you are given a certificate of authenticity (with the name of the outlet you purchased from) guaranteeing exactly what you have been told you are purchasing. Be advised that there are other pearls on the market that may look like authentic Cook Islands black pearls, but they are not. Buy from well-recognised retail outlets.
